Dimension Data announced today the company has signed a A$1.2 million dollar multisourcing contract with Xstrata Technology for the provision of managed services for the company’s unified communications infrastructure.

The contract is for two years, with the option for a two year extension. It includes the provision of implementation and support services for Xstrata Technology’s core infrastructure, including its server, network and IP telephony environment.

Xstrata Technology is part of Xstrata Plc, a major global diversified mining company. Xstrata Technology is based in Queensland, and develops, markets and supports technologies for the global mineral processing and metals smelting and refining industries, with over 100 staff at sites in Australia, South Africa, Canada and Chile.

Xstrata Technology moved from a previous outsourced shared services arrangement with Xstrata Zinc and Xstrata Copper to adopt a new outsourcing contract with Dimension Data. Since signing the contract in February 2009, Dimension Data is currently transitioning Xstrata Technology successfully to the new managed services structure.

This engagement comes on the back of Dimension Data’s existing work with Xstrata Technology, in which it implemented new Microsoft Core Technologies and Cisco Unified Communications infrastructure to enable the organisation’s mobile and geographically-spread workforce to communicate better across the business.

Commenting on the value of Dimension Data’s services, Xstrata Technology’s IT Manager Peter Hamilton said: “Xstrata Technology is an organisation that understands the value of having business-enhancing systems, and we made the decision to partner with Dimension Data to roll out a new Microsoft environment and Cisco Unified Communications infrastructure to enhance the way our mobile workforce communicates and works with the broader Xstrata business. And we needed a serious commitment to keep our vital communications infrastructure running in peak condition, a commitment we found at Dimension Data.”

“Dimension Data was awarded the project for developing a unique adaptive multisource contract to support Xstrata Technology’s journey toward ITIL version 3 maturity. The underpinning contract will provide us with Levels 2, 3 and 4 support to our core Microsoft, Symantec and Cisco infrastructure. This multisource agreement allows us to consolidate our own communications infrastructure and independently support our global business, and to prepare our business for future growth,” Mr Hamilton said.

Commenting on the contract, Dimension Data’s National Solutions and Services Director Dave D’Aprano said: “Dimension Data was awarded the contract on the strength of our ability to understand Xstrata Technology’s vision in terms of the role technology needed to play in changing the way it services its clients. And we delivered on an adaptive multisource contract that aligned with Xstrata Technology’s corporate standards and business goals.”

“Xstrata Technology is a small dynamic team within the Xstrata group that partnered with Dimension Data to help implement its IT strategy to enable Xstrata Technology to focus on its clients. As a specialised organisation within Xstrata moving away from a large outsourcing contract, Dimension Data was able to help Xstrata Technology through its resourcing challenges and the process of setting up a new services arrangement.”

“This is a great contract for us and further proof that Dimension Data’s multisourcing strategy is paying dividends,” Mr D’Aprano said.
