Austrade Goes Multimedia With Elcom

Australian Government portal for exporters and investors adds advanced multimedia and training resources to its website, along with a fresh new look

The Australian Trade Commission (Austrade), the Australian Government’s trade and investment development agency, is adding a raft of new multimedia training, information and social media content to its website (www.austrade.gov.au) with the help of local enterprise content management company Elcom.

Site visitors – Australian exporters and overseas investors and buyers – will soon be able to search for video and audio content of interest to them, which is then automatically fetched and displayed in the web browser. Content can also be fed through Apple’s iTunes as a podcast or vodcast for customers that need mobile access to information, and can be referenced through Facebook and Twitter.

“Our website is the main communications and marketing channel to our customers around the world and has become even more important since Austrade took up responsibility for attracting inward investment in July last year,” says Emma Palmer, Web Manager, Corporate Marketing and Communications, Austrade.

“This means our audience has expanded significantly, and the new functionality will help us deliver more direct, interactive content that our customers can use to improve their business in a tough economy.”

Palmer says flexibility was the overarching goal throughout the website design process.

“One of the reasons we have partnered with Elcom is that we needed to make it as easy and transparent as possible for the team to add and manage the content on the website,” she says. “Having worked with Elcom for more than two years now as our web developer and host, we knew we’d be getting the cutting edge in terms of end-user and administrative functionality, and that any changes or additions we needed to make would be done without delay.”.

The new multimedia functionality, expected to be completed next month, relies on Elcom’s CommunityManager.NET web development platform to dynamically deliver specific content to site users, and makes it easy for Austrade’s web team to manage the content that appears on its site. Almost any multimedia format is supported, and can be made available through the media centre portal ‘on-the-fly’ by selecting content tagged with specific keywords.

“Web development is not the core IT function for most businesses and Government agencies and departments, so it’s important they find a local resource that can quickly address their content requirements and provide them with round-the-clock support,” says John Anstey, founder and CEO, Elcom.

“In this instance we’re using technology that’s built in to our web development platform to add new functionality to Austrade’s site without having to develop a new module or application from scratch,” he says. “Austrade gets maximum flexibility when it comes to how, when and where it makes the functionality available to its customers.”

Elcom was recently placed on the ‘Whole of Government ICT suppliers list’ until February 2012, one of only 200 local companies to successfully apply for the position. The company is also working on a new module for CommunityManager.NET that enables Government organisations on a Federal, State and Local level to manage content and documents, share information and collaborate.
