Sydney, Aust, April 6th 2009 - AppSense, the leading provider of user environment management solutions for the enterprise, announced today that St Andrew’s Catholic College in Queensland has implemented AppSense Management Suite to help manage and control pupil access to applications within Citrix, enhance remote access for staff and students and increase server capacity and performance.

St Andrew’s is using the suite to proactively manage and control applications installed or executed on its computers by creating its own list of allowed or safe applications, automatically blocking any that are disallowed or unfamiliar. Part of the suite, AppSense Application Manager keeps a record when a forbidden script or application attempts to execute, detailing who attempted to execute it and the device used. St Andrew’s can now prevent students from attempting to disrupt operations by tampering with the network and accessing banned applications.

Damon Thompson, ICT Manager at St Andrew’s, commented, “Reactive application management is certainly not strong enough in a school environment where children are becoming increasingly technologically savvy. We had a few incidences where students worked out how to send network messages through the school to disrupt operations. Because AppSense automatically takes care of this, the responsibility is taken off the IT staff. Not only does AppSense prevent the script from being executed, but the records allow us to trace the person responsible. It’s the technology equivalent of a teacher having eyes in the back of their head!”

As well as security benefits, AppSense Management Suite is also providing St Andrew’s students and staff with an improved experience when accessing the school network remotely to complete or mark assignments. By reducing the size of users’ Citrix profiles, home users with a dial-up or slow internet connection can still access their personal settings remotely.

Finally, St Andrew’s is using AppSense to dramatically improve its server capacity. By accommodating up to 60% more users per server, the college has been able to switch off a number of unused servers, saving space and energy while ultimately reducing running costs.

Sean Walsh, General Manager for ANZ at AppSense commented, “The use of unauthorised software is a primary factor in destabilising user environments, and the costs associated with rectifying IT systems that are corrupted by rogue executables can be significant. Regardless of how a user’s environment is delivered, it is essential that they receive only the applications they require and cannot introduce unknown executables into the environment. AppSense Management Suite gives IT managers the control over their systems, while delivering an improved user experience – it’s win win.”
