Oracle CEO Larry Ellison has had a tough year. The man who was once dubbed the "Muhammad Ali of software" is helplessly watching as the competitive landscape shifts and his personal wealth takes a hammering.
And don't get Larry started on nansy-pansy buzzwords taking over the industry. The term that really rubs him the wrong way is "cloud computing," as an audience of analysts discovered last October during a Q&A session:
The computer industry is the only industry that is more fashion-driven than women's fashion. Maybe I'm an idiot, but I have no idea what anyone is talking about. What is it? It's complete gibberish. It's insane. When is this idiocy going to stop?
Unfortunately for Ellison, not any time soon. Thursday morning's Wall Street Journal notes that there is some confusion over the definition of cloud computing. Still, that hasn't stopped practically every major IT vendor from jumping on the cloud computing bandwagon with products that promote the potential of Internet-based storage, processing, and software services.
Oracle is no different from the rest of the herd. Googling "cloud computing" on the Oracle.com domain currently turns up more than 108,000 results, starting with Oracle's own Cloud Computing Center. For a term that is supposedly complete gibberish, his company clearly sees a lot of potential in the cloud.
