Telstra rebundles portals

Telstra is revamping its main dial-up portal to incorporate bundled services.

Telstra Retail managing director Ted Pretty said Telstra.com was not being scaled back, but "re-purposed" to address market changes and provide Telstra's prime brand interface to the market.

The portal will also provide support for access services such as BigPond and Telstra mobile services, which would also be bundled with other services as an online channel.

Pretty said it was important for Telstra to have an access service that it could bundle or distribute content or applications from any of the major Internet players or small developers.

He said at the time Telstra.com was started competitors such as Microsoft, Yahoo, AOL7 had asked the telco to tie-in with their products.

However, Telstra had declined the chance to give narrowband and broadband revenues in exchange for applications and content from those providers.

He said that Telstra's strategy that it needed access directly to the customer, rather than a horizontal portal arrangement, had proven correct.
