IBM Tivoli Storage Manager provides expanded features and platform support

Sydney, Australia - 30 July 2003 - IBM today announced product enhancements to IBM Tivoli Storage Manager on the 10th anniversary of the storage management solution’s launch. IBM Tivoli Storage Manager embarks on its second decade as a storage management leader by providing intelligent storage management technology to help customers protect data and automate and optimise their storage environment.

In an industry where every year over the past decade the average enterprise doubles the amount of storage it requires, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager continues to revolutionise storage by providing high availability while addressing the ever-changing needs of business. To help accommodate new government and industry regulations, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager 5.2 is now available with extended retention time enabling data to be automatically stored for more than 82 years. The extended retention time enables customers to more easily address an important aspect of record retention regulations using automated policy-based updates.

Designed to further automate storage management, new operational reporting and monitoring for Tivoli Storage Manager is now available to simplify daily reports and performance monitoring of Tivoli Storage Manager servers. This new technology preview is now available in a download at no charge for supported IBM Tivoli Storage Manager customers.

Additional platform support for Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Linux on IBM zSeries servers and client support for Linux on IBM pSeries servers has been added to the product to help leverage resources using open, integrated solutions. Other enhancements in the product include support for 11 new tape drives and libraries. This includes Panasonic and Exabyte tape drives and IBM and Hewlett-Packard Gen 2 LTO tape drives and Breece Hill, HP/Compaq, Panasonic, Fujitsu and Sony libraries. The product now supports more than 675 storage devices.

10 Years as a Storage Industry Leader
With these additions, IBM Tivoli Software continues a tradition of storage software excellence that began in 1993 deep within IBM’s Almaden research lab in Silicon Valley. Since then, the innovation behind IBM Tivoli Storage Manager has helped spark what is now, according to Gartner, a thriving $4.7 billion storage management software industry.*

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, originally called IBM ADSM, paved the way for a new era of storage management. Ten years ago, the solution’s architects realised the business need to focus on recovery integrity and speed, as much as backup efficiency. IBM was also at the forefront of solving another customer need when IBM Tivoli Storage Manager integrated data protection and backup and recovery with enterprise-wide systems management.

“IBM Tivoli Storage Manager’s accomplishments are validated when you consider how much the IT industry has evolved and expanded over the past 10 years and how TSM has anticipated changing needs,” said Grant Smith, Tivoli Storage Manager, IBM Australia and New Zealand. “In 1993, there were only 50 Web servers worldwide and the storage area network had not even been invented. Tivoli Storage Manager represents a pioneering product in the storage industry that showcased a new architecture ahead of the industry.”

Today, millions of computers protect their data with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager and 96 of the world’s top 100 financial institutions rely on IBM Tivoli storage solutions. With its broad platform support, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager backs up from mainframe to laptop. IBM’s innovation is evident in this pioneering technology which consists of more than 224 patents.

Among the many companies across Asia Pacific using IBM Tivoli Storage Manager are: Samsung Electronics, Coles Myer Limited, Korea First Bank, Altria Group Asia Pacific, Korea National Police, Edith Cowan University, Hyundai Kia Motor Company, IAG Insurance (including CGU Insurance), Korea Exchange Bank, University of Auckland, LG Home Shopping

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager 5.2 is available today direct from IBM or through IBM business partners. IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Operational Reporting is available as a download at no charge to supported customers at the IBM software support website at
