Dell, Red Hat to run CBS's SportsLine Web site

CBS SportsLine announced today that it will deploy US$1 million worth of Dell Computer Corp.'s PowerEdge servers and PowerVault storage systems during the next year to run the sports news Web site, CBS.SportsLine.com.

The servers from Dell will run on a Linux operating system from Red Hat Linux Inc., according to a company statement.

The $1 million agreement is part of a three-year deal during which SportsLine will move from proprietary to open-standard systems. SportsLine hasn't yet determined how much it will spend in the second and third years, Dell spokeswoman Michelle Mosmeyer said.

CBS Television Network in New York owns 32 per cent of SportsLine Inc., which is located in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. SportsLine also publishes content for NFL.com, PGATour.com, CnnSI.com and America Online Inc.

As part of the agreement, Dell has agreed to purchase advertising on the CBS SportsLine site, as well as on affiliate GolfWeb.com.

"This agreement is extremely complementary for both companies," said Mark Mariani, president of sales and marketing for SportsLine said in the release.
