"There had already been a debate [at Wikipedia] about the album cover," he said. "They decided it was something they had to include to be completely accurate. It's a very, very fine line. What looks like art and self-expression to one, can look like pornography to another."
Young added that the initial IWF action may push Wikipedia to "readjust" some of those fine lines. "It may bring the decency line back a bit," he added. "They can be stubborn, though, so it may have no impact."
Mark Levitt, vice president for collaboration and enterprise 2.0 strategies at IDC, called Wikipedia "the best example" of an open wiki.
"It's proven to be well self-monitored," he said. "This is not going to doom Wikipedia. How Wikipedia reacts to this is more important."
