BEA to unwrap WebLogic Platform 7.0

Looking to deliver a unified application development, application server, and deployment framework, BEA Systems Inc. next week is expected to announce the availability of WebLogic Platform 7.0, according to sources familiar with company plans.

Due to be announced June 25 at its European user conference in Paris, the announcement includes the release of BEA WebLogic Workshop 7.0, an application development framework for Java, Web services, and XML application development.

According to BEA, the Workshop platform is designed to enable developers to easily create, test, and deploy Web services regardless of programming experience.

Other components of WebLogic Platform 7.0 include WebLogic Portal, which is a portal framework, and WebLogic Integration, for integration services.

"Basically, what WebLogic Platform is, is rather than [having] these discrete products where you have a portal product, an application server product and an integration product, [BEA is] is putting forward this notion of a single platform representing all of that application infrastructure," providing single install, configuration, and management, according to a source familiar with BEA's plans.

"It's [designed] to reduce the complexity of building and managing these server-side applications," the source said.

An analyst said BEA's strategy was consistent with how customers want to buy comprehensive application infrastructure products.

"They're increasingly taking a holistic perspective, not looking for individual products but comprehensive solutions," said analyst Mike Gilpin, research fellow at Giga Information Group Inc., in Washington.

"This is really where the battle has moved. It's no longer about application server versus application server; it's complete platform versus complete platform," Gilpin said. "Customers want to buy things in a combined solution because they get more value that way."
