Novell beefs up security offerings

SAN FRANCISCO (04/09/2001) - Networking software company Novell Inc. used the RSA Conference 2001 here on Monday to announce a brace of security-related offerings.

They included a new version of Novell Modular Authentication Service (NMAS), its enterprise security package. NMAS version 2.0 aims to help companies protect access to network resources through a combination of authentication tools that can include biometric devices, smart cards and digital certificates, the company said in a statement.

The NMAS software, which runs on both NetWare and Microsoft Corp.'s Windows, is compatible with Novell's NDS eDirectory, which lets companies set access policies to certain areas of a network. For example, a password may give a user access to one area of a server, but to tunnel deeper into that server they could be required to use fingerprint recognition.

Licenses for NMAS, which will be available May 31, will be priced at US$49 per user through its resellers and partners, as well as directly from Novell's Web site.

The company also announced a partnership with Nextor, a Nottingham, England-based company that makes software for secure messaging. The partnership will integrate a directory security standard used by Nextor, called X.500, with the Novell's NDS eDirectory. The X.500 standard combined with Novell's DirXML software should help customers share and synchronise corporate data securely on their networks, the companies said. The X.500 driver will be available in the fourth quarter for $10 per user through Novell and its partners.

Novell also announced partnerships with identity verification companies Biometric Access Corp., Entrust Technologies Inc., SmartTrust (a subsidiary of Sonera Corp.), Systemneeds Inc. and VisionSphereTechnologies Inc., which will work with Novell to develop software for providing authorised access to networks that use NDS eDirectory and NMAS.

The RSA Conference 2001 runs through Thursday.
