Users fail to persuade Check Point to extend support

Check Point Software Technologies will stop offering support on version 4.1 of its firewall software at the end of this year, despite calls for an extension from some customers with upgrade concerns.

Check Point, the world's largest firewall software vendor, is forcing its customers to move to its Next Generation (NG) firewall product, launched in mid-2001, by ending support on version 4.1. Customers want an extension, but the software maker won't budge.

Check Point Australia product marketing manager Leslie Stern said the company will continue to take support calls from customers for 4.1 but urged users to upgrade to maximise protection against new and evolving threats.

NG is a new product, written from scratch with many more features than 4.1 and even more features on the way with the release of feature pack 2, expected soon, company officials said. An upgrade from 4.1 to NG is a major upgrade.
