HP/COMPAQ: HP names post-merger execs, court date set

Aiming to position itself for a successful acquisition of Compaq Computer, Hewlett-Packard (HP) on Wednesday named 150 senior managers, including those who will report directly to the heads of HP's new businesses. The managers include executives from both HP and Compaq, HP said in a statement.

According to HP, its announcement is "an important step on the critical path to ensuring the company is prepared to hit the ground running once legal approval is obtained."

Although HP is, at least publically, confidently planning for an HP/Compaq future, the Palo Alto, California, company still faces litigation from Walter Hewlett, the eldest son of cofounder William Hewlett, in his effort to stop the merger.

Hewlett filed a lawsuit on March 28 in Delaware Chancery Court charging that HP rigged his proxy battle by coercing Frankfurt, Germany-based Deutsche Bank AG to switch 17 million of its 25 million shares in favor of the US$22 billion merger, after it had allegedly already voted against the deal.

Judge William Chandler III has set an April 23 trial date for the lawsuit, though HP's motion to have the lawsuit dismissed will be heard on Sunday, according to court records.
