Hutchison signs 3G deal for Australia

Hutchison today announced a $US700 million contract with Motorola for the supply of third generation (3G) wireless devices.

Under the contract Motorola is the preferred supplier of the 3G devices in markets including Australia, Austria, Italy, Sweden and the UK.

The deal is for the delivery of devices through to at least the end of 2003 and Motorola officials said it expects to begin delivery of devices in the third quarter of 2002.

Both companies will work on 3G wireless communications solutions and Motorola will work with Hutchison's infrastructure vendors and application developers to bring new market-driven technologies to market.

The devices, in addition to supporting third-party developed applications, will have a constant connection to the Internet and will operate on GSM (Global Systems for Mobile Communications), GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service) wireless networks. - AAP
