Adobe Systems will release an updated version of its popular Acrobat Reader software on Palm Inc. PDAs (personal digital assistant) by the end of June, the company said in a statement Tuesday.
A free beta version of Acrobat Reader for Palm OS 2.0 is available immediately for download from Adobe's Web site, according to the statement. It requires devices with Palm OS 3.5 or higher and a minimum available memory of 315K bytes.
The new version will add support for secured Portable Document Format (PDF) files through the use of password protection and will be available in French, German, Italian, and Spanish as well as English, Adobe said.
The new version allows users to read, navigate and search color and black-and-white Adobe PDF documents, such as product manuals and reference guides with the format automatically tailored to fit the width of the smaller handheld screen, according to the statement.
More than 1 million customers downloaded the initial version of Acrobat Reader for Palm OS, Adobe said.
