CCIE gains a security track

Those pursuing Cisco's most advanced certification have a new pinnacle to reach for - the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert Security. Adding to the traditional focus on core IP routing and switching, the new CCIE program emphasizes a broad range of security-related technologies.

Candidates must demonstrate a high level of expertise by physically configuring a secure enterprise network under timed, stressful conditions. Lab scenarios involve a variety of products and technologies including firewalls, intrusion detection, authentication servers, routers and switches.

"As organizations accelerate their interest in Internet business solutions, they need qualified networking professionals who possess the skills necessary to ensure the security of all network-based transactions," says Tim Kelly, vice president of Cisco's Internet Learning Solutions group.

"Security is the last place organizations take unnecessary risks and staffing doesn't need to be one of them."

To achieve the certification, candidates must pass the Security qualification exam and lab exam. Preparation will vary depending on your previous work experience, training and time available. Cisco recommends the following classes, although they aren't required:

* Managing Cisco Network Security

* Cisco Secure Intrusion Detection Systems* Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Fundamentals* Cisco Secure Virtual Private Network* Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced* Building Cisco Remote Access NetworksFor more information about the CCIE Security program, go to http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/625/ccie/ and select the security track.

Cisco also has another security certification, the Cisco Security Specialist 1. Demand for Cisco's fastest-growing certification increases about 10% to 12% per month. To achieve the certification, candidates must have a valid Cisco Certified Network Associate certification and be proficient at designing, installing and supporting Cisco-specific security products in three core areas of network security: firewalls, intrusion detection systems and VPNs.
