SYDNEY, 19 March 2004 – Teradata, a division of NCR Corporation, announced the shipment of the Teradata Dual Active Solution, further enhancing the ability of its data warehouses to become a reliable foundation on which companies can run mission-critical business-intelligence applications.

“Businesses using Teradata can now do things that have never been done in a traditional data warehouse environment, and the Teradata Dual Active Solution further supports these efforts,” said Todd Higginson, manager of Teradata professional services marketing. “We continue to see businesses innovate by leveraging their Teradata data warehouse. Those innovations are yielding greater and greater business value by creating new revenue streams, bringing companies closer to their customers, improving operational efficiencies and delivering information to frontline decision-makers.”

With traditional backup or redundant systems, the second system sits idle until needed, which is expensive and inefficient. The new Teradata Dual Active Solution provides the ability to deploy a second geographically dispersed system as a part of the production environment, allowing users and applications access to both systems simultaneously. This provides performance continuity, while also maintaining availability during outages or disasters.

In the event of planned or unplanned downtime, the secondary system assumes all of the workload from the primary system associated with the identified mission-critical data and applications. Customers have the flexibility of determining which applications and how much data will be supported on the secondary system.

“By making the second system a synchronised production system instead of sitting idle, it provides real business value and a cost justification for a high-availability environment,” said Higginson. “The Teradata Dual Active Solution offers significant cost benefits because it allows the second system to be considerably smaller than the primary system, as compared to a traditional redundant-system approach.”

The Teradata Dual Active solution is available for shipment on March 17, 2004.
