Builder calls up IP telephony

The Asian Pacific Building Corporation (APBC) is spending more than $1 million on an Internet Protocol (IP) telephony solution to provide services for more than 3000 building staff and tenants in its office complex in Queens Road, Melbourne.

Cisco Systems supplied the APBC -- which is a commercial office development company that provides leasing and a range of value-add services to tenants across five sites in Melbouorne -- with its Architecture for Voice, Video and Integrated Data sysem, to consolidate the APBC building's entire communications infrastructure onto one IP-based network.

It is hoped the solution will create increased network management efficiencies, flexibility and scalability through the deployment of IP-based networking.

The installation has also removed the need for traditional PABX technology and will allow APBC to offer its tenants and staff access to building services through the LCD display interface of the Cisco 7960 IP phone, according to Cisco officals.

David Sheridan, general manager, telecommunications, APBC, said "with Cisco's IP communications system, we have turned the Queens Road site into a telephony hub centre based on IP, which means we can offer our staff and tenants a range of services which are not possible on traditional PABX systems."

Sheridan said NetStar Networks were the systems integrators for the project.

Sheridan said the APBC was also working on another IP implementation at its Bell Centre in Melbourne.

Networking equipment in the Cisco solution for APBC is based on Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series switches, Cisco 4000 Series switches, Cisco Voice Gateways and Cisco 7960 IP phones.
