CompUSA Shuts Down

FRAMINGHAM (03/21/2000) - CompUSA Inc. has closed its Web site due to slow sales.

In an announcement issued yesterday, the Dallas-based company said it's embarking on a new e-commerce strategy. A posting at said the site has been integrated with the CompUSA site.

The move was prompted by poor sales at during the holiday season, said Suzanne Shelton, a company spokeswoman. In its most recent statement of earnings, CompUSA said sales at were below expectations and the company was re-evaluating its e-commerce strategy.

The separate Web site never caught on with consumers, and company officials decided to try to capitalize on CompUSA's high name recognition, said Shelton.

"We just felt it was better to build on that instead of trying to develop a separate site," she said.

The site offers a better integration of its in-store and e-commerce products and services and will allow customers to "make purchases in whatever combination of retail and online they prefer," CompUSA President and CEO James F. Halpin said in the announcement.

Customers will be able to return online purchases at a store, and in coming months they will be able to make purchases online for in-store pick-up, Shelton said.
