<p>HP Australia Tops SMB PC Market Again
Leading research figures confirm HP's SMB leadership in overall PC and x86 Server Shipments</p>
<p>SYDNEY, Australia, 31 March 2004 Hewlett Packard (HP) has again been named one of the leading suppliers of technology for small and medium sized businesses (SMBs) by technology research firm IDC, in its latest PC Tracker report.</p>
<p>HP has been the overall leader in SMB PC shipments in Australia since the merger with Compaq and the combined businesses have topped the SMB PC shipments for the past eight years in a row.</p>
<p>In quarter four 2003 the IDC PC Tracker results showed HP topped all x86 Intel based server categories (small office, small business &amp; medium business) and was the leader in total PC market shipments.</p>
<p>The combined IDC Australian PC Tracker totals for the full year 2003 also confirmed that HP is the leader in combined desktop, notebook and x86 server shipments. Contributing to this success was its outstanding lead in the Medium Business (50 to 499 employees) x86 server category with a market share of 40.4 per cent, well ahead of its nearest competitor at 24.3 per cent. HP also held the lead for Medium Business Desktops and expanded its market share to 18.2 per cent.</p>
<p>"These results reflect the focus HP and its partners put on supporting the SMB market," said Wilma Walsh, Medium Business Marketing Manager, HP Australia.</p>
<p>"HP has created a solid foundation for continued, significant growth for our products and services in the SMB market and the latest results from IDC show that we are continuing to build on this."</p>
<p>While HP is renowned for its innovative, reliable and SMB ready products, this is only part of the equation for SMB owners. Many SMB's are increasingly relying on technology to operate so it is critical for them to have highly reliable solutions combined with easy access to expertise for optimum installation and ongoing support for these solutions.</p>
<p>"By providing this expertise, HP and its partners simplify the technology and enable businesses to fully utilise and appreciate the benefits of their investment," said Walsh.</p>

<p>IDC's Annual Small/Medium Enterprise (SME) Survey
IDC's Annual Small/Medium Enterprise (SME) Survey, 'Australian SME Buying Behaviour: Desktop and Mobile PCs, 2004' confirmed some of the reasons why HP continues to be number one in the SMB market. For example, in the desktop and notebook ownership space, HP was the leading vendor with 22.5 per cent of respondents using HP.</p>
<p>The forecast purchases for the next 12 months from these same respondents indicated that HP will remain the most favourable brand, with 22.3 per cent share of future purchases for desktop PCs and notebooks.</p>
<p>The SME Survey also found that the top three avenues for purchase in the future will be via a Computer Specialist (36.3 per cent), Value Added Reseller (17.5 per cent), and a Consumer Retail Outlet or Department Store (13.8 per cent). According to Michael Sager, IDC Market Analyst: "The top two purchasing outlets grew in share over the past year and we feel this is a reflection of the intimacy that the end user must have with the individual or organisation selling the products.</p>
<p>"It is therefore key for SME vendors to have channel breadth, good service offerings and strong ties to these key partners in the SME space if they are to perform well.</p>
<p>"IDC's research also shows SMEs are exhibiting patterns that indicate a desire to decrease complexity within the organisation. This can take a number of forms from standardising on one vendor or operating system platform, or purchasing all IT from one source," said Sager.</p>
<p>Walsh adds: "In Australia partners play the very important role of trusted advisors with SMB customers. The programs we develop are all about providing expertise and ease of business which ensures that our network of partners can service SMB customers in the best way possible."
