Emerson Network Power launches world’s most efficient data centre cooler in Australia

<p>Australian data centres will soon have access to 30 per cent more cooling power per square metre from their computer room air conditioners (CRAC), thanks to Emerson Network Power’s new Liebert PEX precision air cooler.</p>
<p>The new cooler, designed and manufactured by Emerson, is being launched next week at the ARBS (Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Building Services) Exhibition 2008 in Melbourne. It is the highest kilowatt-per-square-metre precision CRAC in its class, with up to 30 per cent more cooling power per square metre (including service area) than other industry-standard CRACs. It also has one of the smallest kilowatt per square metre footprints in precision air equipment available today.</p>
<p>“Cooling is one of the most important – and costly – functions of a modern, high-density data centre,” says Mark Deguara, National Product Manager, Emerson Network Power Australia. “Up to 50 per cent of the power used in a data centre goes to the infrastructure used to cool down the computer equipment in the facility. The more efficient the cooler, the lower the cost to the data centre, which in large facilities amounts to millions of dollars every year.</p>
<p>“Emerson engineers have long understood that the ‘whole footprint’ of a CRAC includes the extended footprint defined by operation and service access area requirements,” says Deguara. “The new Liebert PEX requires nothing more than direct front access for installation and routine servicing. This means that you can achieve 100 per cent space utilisation around the unit and not suffer dead space caused by service access requirements on the sides and rear. With other units, you will lose valuable floor space for the same kilowatt capacity – which means less room for racks and ultimately higher total cost of ownership.”</p>
