IBM, HighGround Team on Storage

HighGround Systems Inc. and IBM Corp. on Wednesday announced that they have reached an agreement in which IBM will license HighGround's Removable Storage Management (RSM) interface technology it is developing with Microsoft.

The technology will be used in IBM products and will provide a consistent user interface for removable storage management across Windows 2000 (formerly Windows NT)and Unix systems.

IBM will use RSM as the interface for its StorWatch family of storage products, to be used by IT professionals managing shared media, devices, and libraries in heterogeneous storage environments. The technology is already employed in Windows 2000 beta versions, which will ease the way toward expanded ISV support, and development on other platforms, HighGround said.

"This is significant news," said Michael Peterson, president of Strategic Research Corp., in Santa Barbara Calif. "The promise of RSM is that it brings plug-and-play capabilities to the installation and management of removable media storage resources."

HighGround and IBM will cooperate on common RSM APIs across Windows 2000 and Unix platforms, and HighGround says the interface will also be expanded to other major platforms.
