Risk management specialist b-Sec Consulting has merged with Deloitte boosting the professional services firm's security and privacy services group by an additional 20 staff.
The 20 member b-Sec team from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, including CEO Oliver Binz will join Deloitte's existing national security practice of 38 professionals.
Deloitte's head of risk services, Ron Loborec said the merger reflects a global trend.
"Government organisations and global companies, particularly in financial services, require security providers of sufficient scale and capability to meet the increasing threats from fraud and organised crime," he said.
"Managing security, especially given the strong uptake of Web based applications that share data among communities, is a huge challenge which requires end-to-end solutions if data leakage is to be prevented and the massive costs of security lapses are to be avoided.
"This will only increase if potential compulsory breach notification is introduced into Australia in line with the Privacy Commissioner's recent calls for amendments to the Privacy Act."
The federal government is currently reviewing the Privacy Act and is planning to introduce laws for the mandatory reporting of security breaches.
Loborec said Deloitte's security services are growing globally at a rate of 30 per cent.
b-Sec Consulting founder and managing director Oliver Binz said the seven-year-old boutique firm decided to join forces with Deloitte to offer clients the benefits of increased scale and access to global resources while maintaining independence from product vendors.
"While b-Sec has taken a clear leadership position in the Australian market in a range of specific security disciplines, the market is increasingly looking for strong end to end solutions to tackle an increasingly complex problem, whether at the level of systems architecture, networks or remote devices such as PDAs, Blackberries or mobile phones," Binz said.
"Merging with Deloitte gives us unmatched capability and resources to help our clients protect their business as well as the best opportunities for innovation and growth for our people."
Head of the Deloitte security and privacy services, Tommy Viljoen, said b-Sec boasts a range of innovative tools and methodologies that Deloitte can introduce on a global scale.
