Loudcloud provides safety net

Managed infrastructure service provider Loudcloud rolled out a service Tuesday designed to help customers prepare their Web sites for visitor onslaughts during high-profile promotions and events.

With the Loudcloud High Alert Service, customers work with Loudcloud to identify possible trouble spots, do pre-event stress testing and then create a plan to ensure the site runs at its best during heavy traffic periods. A post-event analysis gives customers insight into how their sites performed.

Loudcloud can already rapidly scale a Web site in response to spikes in traffic using its Opsware automation technology, but Loudcloud High Alert Service gives customers peace of mind by putting a plan in place before traffic levels jump, Loudcloud executives say.

Ed Godycki, CTO of Fandango Inc., an online movie ticket retailer, says the high alert service enables him to ensure a Web site is set up to handle a rush in demand when big movies open. Fandango is working with Loudcloud to prepare its site for big movie releases in the next few months, including Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, which is scheduled for release on May 16.

The Loudcloud High Alert Service involves an analysis of the customer's Web site to identify potential trouble spots and then development of a plan for monitoring and response during a high-traffic event. In addition, customers may elect to conduct stress tests and get a complete analysis of the site architecture before an event, as well as add hardware or networking equipment if expected traffic loads demand it.

Pricing depends on customer configurations and needs, Loudcloud says.
