Electronic Data Systems today announced that it has signed a US$175 million, seven-year contract to provide 7-Eleven with IT services on an as-needed basis.
Under the agreement, which extends a contract signed in 1995, Dallas-based 7-Eleven will pay for services as they're used. Originally handling systems development, Plano, Texas-based EDS is now 7-Eleven's primary systems and services integrator, providing hosting and storage services for the firm's corporate data.
As part of the new deal, EDS will continue to develop and expand the convenience store chain's ordering, distribution, financial and vendor systems.
EDS will also enable 7-Eleven to rapidly deploy Vcom, its new self-service delivery vehicle. Vcom, an ATM-like interactive device with a touch screen, is being tested in 98 7-Eleven stores in Texas and Florida.
7-Eleven's customers can use Vcom to cash checks, purchase money orders and obtain other financial services. EDS hosts 7-Eleven's Vcom transaction engine and database software, which provides transaction routing between the kiosks and Vcom partners, the company said.
"This new agreement gives us greater value for our IT investment by lowering our operating costs and providing greater flexibility, which allows us to redirect resources to aggressively pursue e-business initiatives, such as the in-store electronic kiosks we are currently testing," said Keith Morrow, 7-Eleven's CIO, in a statement.
Last year, EDS announced similar agreements with Golden, Colo.- based Coors Brewing Co. and St. Louis-based Solutia Inc., a maker of the PVB plastic interlayer used to manufacture the laminated glass used in automotive windshields and in architectural and residential applications.
