Symantec shores up Enterprise Firewall/VPN

New versions of Symantec's Enterprise Firewall and Enterprise VPN (virtual private network) products now feature support for the new Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), secure video-conferencing through the firewall and easier VPN deployment to its offerings, the vendor announced on Monday.

Symantec Enterprise Firewall 7.0 includes a new engine for inspecting traffic flowing through the firewall, according to Barry Cioe, director of product management at Symantec. The engine provides full inspection of all traffic, and allows for full inspection of video-conferencing applications used securely in conjunction with the firewall, Cioe said. The firewall also adds support for AES -- the new government-approved encryption standard --, improved management features and load-balancing to enable the firewall to handle higher volumes of traffic more easily, he added.

Version 7.0 of Symantec Enterprise VPN also adds support for AES to the IPSec-compatible virtual private network software, Cioe said, but also aims to make deploying and configuring the VPN easier. Virtual private networks are a secure method of using the Internet to connect to a corporate network as if a remote user were connected locally. The new version of the software offers administrators the option to create a preconfigured "bootstrap" file which can be automatically downloaded to the client whenever the client tries to create a connection, he said, allowing for easy policy creation and updating.

Both applications run on Windows NT and 2000, as well as on Solaris 7, with the new versions of each adding support for Solaris 8, Cioe said. Both applications are available worldwide immediately at a cost of $US1995 each. Symantec Enterprise Firewall 7.0 can be purchased with Enterprise VPN integrated for around $3000, he added. The VPN client runs on Windows 95/98/ME/XP, with pricing based upon the licence purchased.
