BlueNote Network to offer APIs for unified communications

APIs will allow delivering of messages or notifications across all communications channels

BlueNote Networks, a communications middleware vendor, will announce today two Web service APIs for its SOA Edition of SessionSuite middleware.

The Outbound Notification Solution Framework (On-SF) and the Session Interaction Plugin Framework (SI-PF) will have broad applicability as shared services that can be embedded into enterprise applications.

ON-SF is a single API that will allow organizations to deliver a message or notification across all communications channels such as e-mail, telephony, IM, or text message.

"We do a lot of the heavy lifting for the developer," said Mark Ericson, director of product strategy at BlueNote.

Ericson was referring to the fact that instead having to have "purpose built" APIs for each channel, the ON-SF API delivers the message across all channels.

The second API, SI-PF serves a similar function in delivering IVR (Interactive Voice Response)-like technology for multiple communications channels.

As an alternative to technologies like VoiceXML, which is used to create IVR scripts for telephone response, SI-PF uses SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and delivers it as a shared service, supporting interactive video, text chat, or other communications media types.

Although BlueNote does not have the high profile of other unified communications players such as Cisco, IBM, Microsoft, and Siemens, it is, in fact, part of a rising class of companies delivering much-needed enabling middleware to the UC space, according to Gartner Research Vice President Bern Elliot.

In the old days, says Elliot, if a user was in an ERP or SCM (Supply Chain Management) application and he needed to talk to someone, he would pick up the phone and make a call.

"Now you get APIs and integration of communications with business applications," Elliot said.

The SessionSuite APIs also leverage existing IT assets like Active Directory to authenticate users.

The middleware also allows developers using to ON-SF to create a series of escalating notification rules based on such things as presence or role within the organization.

ON-SF and SI-PF will be available by the end of the month.
