Immersive Technologies chooses Emerson and J Mills for power protection

 • 16 November, 2007 12:09

Perth-based Immersive Technologies, the leading global provider of operator training simulators to the mining and earthmoving industries, has chosen to integrate power protection solutions from Emerson Network Power for its complete range of Advanced Equipment (AE) Simulators.

Supplied through Western Australia distributor J Mills, Emerson’s Liebert-branded Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS) will be used to provide a clean power source for the AE Simulators’ multiple rack-mounted PCs and projection equipment used for each simulator, while also providing protection for the equipment in the event of a power failure.

With more than 100 simulators and 300 manufacturer-specific Conversion Kit™ machine modules deployed in 20 countries around the world, Immersive Technologies’ products are integral to the operations of many of the world’s largest mining companies, who use the technology to improve operational safety and efficiency while reducing unscheduled maintenance costs.

Immersive Technologies Hardware Engineer Alistair Kitchen says that with a basic simulator and single Conversion Kit™ module starting in the vicinity of $500,000, power protection for the company’s products is mandatory.

“Our simulators have become integral in the training of new and existing operators in a wide variety of different operational and emergency scenarios, without risk to the trainee or actual equipment onsite,” says Kitchen.

“Some of our sites are located in some of the most inhospitable terrain on Earth. As such it’s imperative that we’re able to protect the simulators from unforeseen power outages and provide a clean power source in less-than-ideal conditions, sometimes hundreds of miles removed from a stable power grid.”

“Many organisations still consider power protection as an afterthought, but in recent years, especially with the boom in business-critical – and power sensitive – networks, power has become front-of-mind for just about any major IT deployment,” says Mark Deguara, National Product Manager, Emerson Network Power Australia.

“Not only that, companies are becoming more attuned to the different types of UPS technologies. In the case of valuable equipment developed by Immersive Technologies, older-style UPSs that depend on a clean supply of power from the mains are insufficient for protecting the sensitive electronics of the simulators. Emerson’s solution is based on what we call true-online or double conversion technology, which feeds the equipment a clean power supply regardless of the quality of the source. This means that in the event of power dips, surges or brownouts, the equipment will continue to operate unaffected.”

Immersive Technologies sought out Western Australia owned and operated technology distributor J Mills to supply the UPSs for both local and offshore deployments. Emerson’s Liebert-branded true-online GXT UPSs were chosen for the project, with 30 having been ordered so far. J Mills and Immersive Technologies have an agreement in place to supply UPSs for newly built AE Simulators for the next three years.

“It was important for us that we source our equipment from local suppliers, because our products are made to order and shipment schedules can be irregular,” says Kitchen. “J Mills and Emerson have proved highly responsive to our needs, and their solution clearly demonstrates and understanding of our company and products.”
