Riverbed releases results of second-half 2007 customer satisfaction survey

 • 26 October, 2007 15:50

Riverbed Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: RVBD), the technology and market leader in wide-area data services (WDS), announced today the results of its semi-annual customer survey conducted in September 2007; over 1000 deployed customers responded, representing 804 organisations.

The results continue to trend upward and show, once again, that customers are highly satisfied with Riverbed’s Steelhead® products and technical support. The results also reveal key purchase motivations, with application acceleration selected by respondents as their primary motivation for purchasing Riverbed’s Steelhead WDS appliances. Other purchase motivations included bandwidth savings, enabling faster IT consolidation without degrading application performance, data protection through faster disaster recovery, and the availability of the Company’s new Steelhead Mobile software product that dramatically improves the productivity of mobile workers from wherever they are.

Of the respondents who evaluated alternatives, 370, representing 358 organisations, chose Riverbed’s Steelhead appliances over Cisco’s WAAS offerings, and 233, representing 225 organisations, selected Riverbed’s Steelhead appliances over Juniper’s WX or WXC appliances. In addition, 272 customers surveyed chose Riverbed® without considering other WDS vendors, which is 99% higher than results from Spring 2007 and only second to the number of customers that considered Cisco WAAS but selected Riverbed as the superior solution.

Riverbed conducts its customer survey twice annually. The survey looks at customer satisfaction with Riverbed’s products, technical support and professional services, customer purchase motivations, applications accelerated by Riverbed’s Steelhead appliances, other vendors considered in the purchase process and why customers chose Riverbed.

Customer satisfaction: 90% of the respondents gave Riverbed an overall company rating of eight or higher on a scale of 1 to 10. This group also indicated they were likely to buy more Riverbed in the future and would recommend Riverbed to colleagues. This statistic is up from 87% Spring 2007. In addition, 41% of respondents gave Riverbed a perfect score of 10 out of 10. Product performance, hardware and software quality and management capabilities were all highly rated, with an overall rating of 8.92, up from a rating of 8.88 for performance in the Spring 2007 survey.

Purchase motivations: Riverbed surveyed the customer base to track their primary and secondary purchase motivations. Once again, application acceleration was the primary motivator for selecting a WDS solution and Riverbed, up 4% from Spring 2007 to 83%. The ability to reduce bandwidth costs, more quickly and painlessly consolidate IT, and accelerate the disaster recovery processes were also strong buying considerations. A new purchase motivation for Fall 2007 is Steelhead Mobile, made generally available in August 2007. Over 25% of the 1,000 customer respondents said the mobile client was a primary or secondary motivation for buying Riverbed.

Why Riverbed over the Competition: The top three reasons that respondents chose Riverbed over the competition were that the Steelhead appliances deliver faster and better performance, are easier to deploy and manage and offer the broadest support for the applications they want accelerated. Other considerations were pre-sales and support, range of features, scalability, product stability, Riverbed’s reputation in the marketplace, and the availability of Steelhead Mobile.

Applications Accelerated: The customers surveyed are using Riverbed’s WDS solutions to accelerate the broadest range of applications. The top applications that customers surveyed cared most about accelerating are Windows File Sharing, Microsoft Exchange, Web-based applications (e.g., Web-enabled Oracle and SAP, MS SharePoint), MS-SQL back-end applications, custom applications, client/server business applications (e.g., Oracle, SAP), FTP, backup/replication (e.g., SnapMirror, DPM, DoubleTake), thin client, CAD and document management (e.g., Interwoven, Documentum).

About Riverbed’s Steelhead Appliances

Riverbed’s Steelhead products help organisations run applications across corporate networks—from headquarters to the remote office to mobile workers, wherever they may be—in some cases up to 100 times faster, making Riverbed a key driver of the shrinking, faster, more connected corporate world. Riverbed’s WDS solutions allow organisations to consolidate IT infrastructure, enable higher productivity for remote offices, decrease frustration for end users, dramatically shorten backup and replication time and reduce WAN traffic.
Today, more than 3,000 organisations worldwide have selected Riverbed and deployed the Company’s Steelhead products at sites ranging from oil rigs in the South China Seas and submarines in the Atlantic to remote offices and headquarters sites in Vladivostok, Osaka, London and New York City.
