Nextgen Networks inks $40 million deal with Alcatel-Lucent

Customers to get Ethernet-based apps for voice, video and data

Alcatel-Lucent has inked a $40.43 million contract with Australian data services provider, Nextgen Networks.

The deal is to supply WDM, SDH and Ethernet/MPLS equipment and provide Network Operations Centre (NOC) services for Nextgen's optical network.

This will mean new services for Australian business, as Alcatel-Lucent deploy its optical networking products including a suite of network operation services.

Alcatel-Lucent will also provide network management for the optical domain from its Global Network Operations Centre (GNOC) in Sydney, providing round-the-clock support and service to reduce operational costs.

Alcatel-Lucent's services president, John Meyer, said the multi-year contract is a real vote of confidence for the company.

Nextgen Networks owns and operates Australia's third longest optical fiber network, which spans some 8,500 km linking major and regional cities, as well as a national data network.

This includes a VPLS data-switching network.

The upgrade allows Nextgen to offer customers more Ethernet-based applications for voice, video and data services.

All these services will leverage the optical and Ethernet/MPLS-based infrastructures previously deployed by Alcatel-Lucent, thus minimising total cost of network ownership.

Nextgen general manager, Peter Harrison, said the upgrade and extension provides a strong foundation for growth in the Australian market as next-generation multimedia service delivery is creating a demand for greater capacity on the network.

Alcatel-Lucent's optical solution will be based on synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technologies.

Nextgen Networks launched Australia's first national Ethernet VPLS (Virtual Private LAN Service) network based on the Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router in June, 2006.
