Riverbed launches WDS Forum

 • 23 May, 2007 10:28

Riverbed Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: RVBD), the performance leader in wide-area data services (WDS), today introduced the WDS Forum (www.wdsforum.org), an open, on-line, WDS user community hosted by Riverbed. The WDS Forum provides a credible source of information and discussion based on the real-life experiences of participants as they confront the challenges and opportunities created by a distributed and accelerated world.

IT professionals must reconcile the competing demands of a highly distributed workforce and the centralisation of IT. In the WDS Forum, users can ask questions of their peers about their experiences with issues such as poor application performance at remote sites, learn how other companies have overcome these issues and then apply the lessons learned within their organisations. At the same time, collaboration with their peers will give them insight into how to plan and implement IT initiatives that will contribute to business success. As forum participants learn from their peers how WDS technologies have changed and improved business processes and business models, they will gain knowledge that will help move their initiatives from the tactical to the strategic.

“Given Riverbed’s leadership position in WDS, we feel obliged to provide customers, prospects and others considering deploying WDS technologies access to the knowledge and experience of their peers in IT,” said Bob Gilbert, senior product evangelist at Riverbed. “IT professionals around the world are confronting the issues of IT consolidation, security and compliance, and application performance in a 24x7 global economy. The forum harnesses the power and excitement of the user community, letting experienced IT users connect with one another and find answers to their questions about WDS and how it integrates with other technologies.”

The WDS Forum lets participants share their experiences with WDS, offer tips and tricks of deploying and using WDS, gain a greater understanding of the role WDS products can play in their organisations, and get quick, easy access to WDS experts. The forum includes ongoing discussions and answers questions on a variety of topics.

- The Applications Performance forum features discussions ranging from SSL acceleration to AutoCAD performance over the WAN

- Discussions in the Backup/Replication forum cover the impact WDS products have on backup and replication applications such as NetApp® SnapMirror® and Double-Take

- In the Ask the Experts forum, Riverbed personnel answer user questions on topics ranging from the implications of Vista/Longhorn on WAN performance to WDS equipment’s interoperability with networking equipment

Other discussion forums include Site Consolidation, Bandwidth Optimisation, and Network Design for WDS, which offers an opportunity to discuss deployment.

“This WDS Forum is a great idea. I’ve learned much from the questions and answers that other users are posting in this on-line community,” said Ray Sirois, IT manager at Wright-Pierce. “It’s helpful to hear about other firms' environments and how they’re stretching the usefulness and ROI of these appliances."

Participants in the WDS Forum can post attachments such as network diagrams or screenshots of performance graphs to illustrate discussions. In addition, users can participate in polls regarding the performance users are seeing with WDS or the types of applications they are using. Participants can also participate in contests; the first will award an iPod Shuffle to the person who posts the best story about how a company is using WDS products. In the Industry News section, readers can find the latest news from the WDS market.

"The WDS online user community provides an excellent setting where NetApp customers can discuss and exchange best practices about how to integrate WDS products with NetApp SnapMirror to provide high-performing and efficient business continuity solutions for enterprise data centers," said Patrick Rogers, vice president of Solutions Marketing at NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP).

“The WDS online user community is a great tool for getting tips concerning my WAN optimisation product deployment,” said Andrew Read at Ballance Agri-Nutrients. “The forum gives me easy access to IT professionals with similar environments and technical experts with detailed industry knowledge.”

During the WDS Forum’s pilot phase, it attracted more than 280 users who participated in more than 60 discussions and 200 posts. To date, the site has had more than 7,000 topic views, including views from non-registered users. People interested in participating in the WDS Forum can log onto www.wdsforum.org to register.

“The WDS Forum not only provides a valuable opportunity for customers to discuss the use of WDS solutions but also helps educate the entire market about the real value that WDS solutions bring to today's businesses,” said Zeus Keravalla, senior vice president, enterprise research, at The Yankee Group. “The creation of the WDS Forum is another example of how Riverbed is leading the WDS market.”
