Nexsan, Reldata team on IP SAN, NAS

Companies capitalise on the growing trend of connecting storage technologies to the Gigabit Ethernet network via iSCSI or as a NAS box

Nexsan Technologies and Reldata have announced they are teaming to produce a combined IP storage area network/network-attached storage product that includes data replication over WANs.

The package combines Nexsan's SATABeast array with the Reldata 9240 IP Storage Gateway to let customers consolidate and migrate unstructured data.

The Nexsan SATABeast array contains as much as 31.5TB of Serial Advanced Technology Attachment storage and has Fibre Channel and iSCSI connections. In the combined package, the 9240 IP Storage Gateway front-ends SATABeast, letting data residing on that array be available from a Gigabit Ethernet or iSCSI network. The 9240 IP Storage Gateway incorporates six 1Gbps Ethernet ports and two UltraSCSI ports, in addition to dual 4Gbps Fibre Channel ports.

According to different studies, connecting storage technologies to the Gigabit Ethernet network via iSCSI or as a NAS box is growing. Gartner says iSCSI is expected to be a US$2 billion market by 2010. IDC estimates that from now through 2010, iSCSI SANs will show an almost 75 percent compound annual growth rate in worldwide revenue, compared to a CAGR of just over 4 percent for Fibre Channel.

The new Nexsan-Reldata product is available through both companies and starts at US$60,000.
