LGC Wireless today announced that 3 Mobile is the first carrier in the Asia Pacific region to deploy the InterReach Fusion product.
The Fusion system, which supports UMTS and W-CDMA voice, data, and video services on several frequencies, was chosen to improve in-building coverage in major sporting venues in time for the 3 Mobile Ashes cricket series, the biggest sporting event of the Australian summer.
Fusion was deployed at the Sydney Cricket Ground and LGC's InterReach Unison systems were deployed at Brisbane's Wooloongabba ('Gabba) complex and at the Melbourne cricket ground.
As the major sponsor of the Ashes cricket series, 3 Mobile anticipated an increase in coverage demands for voice and its live mobile Cricket TV product.
The upgrade had to be completed in time for thousands of Australian and English cricket fans to enjoy 3 Mobile's services during the three-month cricket series, which began in Brisbane in November 2006.
The upgrade project was undertaken by Kordia Solutions and completed in two months.
The company's principle consultant, Lindsay Patience, said because the Fusion system is multi-carrier only one set of electronics was required with standard CATV cabling to serve both UMTS and W-CDMA frequencies throughout the Sydney cricket ground.
"We were given the challenge to complete a deployment in three large stadiums in a fraction of the time it would normally require, and LGC worked hard to get the equipment to us quickly in order to make it happen," Patience said.
The Sydney cricket ground system includes two 3 Mobile base stations, 5 LGC main hubs, 9 expansion hubs, and 65 remote antennas to distribute signals throughout the facility. At the Gabba, a 79-antenna Unison system was installed with a similar system in Melbourne.
LGC Wireless vice president of marketing, John Spindler, said 3 Mobile has become the first international carrier to deploy its new Fusion system in the Asia-Pacific.
"We anticipate rising deployments of that system throughout our global market," Spindler added.
LGC Wireless has completed more than 10,000 deployments worldwide.
