Microsoft names leaders for search-and-ad unit

Microsoft named executives Wednesday to run its newly formed Search and Ad Platform Group

Microsoft Wednesday named Satya Nadella to lead the newly formed Search and Ad Platform Group, the software giant's effort to optimize the advertising revenue-raising potential of its search business.

Nadella, previously corporate vice president for Microsoft's business solutions group, will report to Kevin Johnson, president of the Platform and Services Division, the company said in a statement.

Microsoft also appointed Harry Shum as chief scientist of the Search and Ad Platform Group. He will coordinate short-term and long-term technology investments in search across the company. Shum will also maintain his existing position as the leader of Microsoft Research Asia.

Microsoft hopes to drive the development of search advertising by combining its search and advertising groups into a single division, the company said on Wednesday.

With the reorganization, Microsoft hopes to keep pace with the success of rivals Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc., in selling advertising related to search results.
