Survey: Microsoft outpacing Apache

Microsoft's Internet Information Services 6 Web server is growing in popularity

A survey of Fortune 1000 companies released this week by Microsoft Partner Port80 Software found that for the first time Microsoft's Internet Information Services 6 Web server has outpaced Apache as the most popular Web server for corporate Web sites.

According to the survey that was conducted in August, IIS 6 held a 27 percent share of the Web server market among Fortune 1000s, compared to 23 percent for Apache. Overall, IIS 4, 5 and 6 combined to serve up about 55 percent of all Fortune 1000 corporate sites, compared to Apache's 23 percent share, according to the Port80 survey.

At the same time, Apache continues to hold a dominant lead in the overall Web, handling 61 percent of nearly 98 million active sites in October, according to Internet services firm Netcraft. Microsoft served up 32 percent of all active Web sites in October, Netcraft said.
