Ericsson Ethernet DSL selected by iiNet Communications for Broadband Network

 • 16 June, 2004 09:16

Ericsson has been awarded a contract by iiNet, Australia’s largest regional Internet Service Provider, to supply Ericsson's Ethernet DSL Access (EDA) solution for a national DSL rollout.
iiNet will use the equipment to extend their existing broadband network, and introduce innovative new Internet and telephony services for customers.
“iiNet has been providing Broadband Internet services for some years now, by repackaging a wholesale ADSL service. However over time it has become clear that we needed more flexibility than was possible with this approach. We needed to build our own broadband network,” said Michael Malone, Managing Director of iiNet.
“Ericsson’s Ethernet DSL Access solution is the right choice for us. It scales easily allowing us to serve everything from very small to very large sites; and fits perfectly with our strategic decision to use Ethernet and IP technologies,” Michael Malone said.
Ericsson’s Ethernet DSL Access solution is the cornerstone of Ericsson's Public Ethernet offering. Featuring remarkably small modular micro-DSLAM’s, the product is far more compact, cost-effective and energy-efficient than older style ATM-based chassis DSLAM’s, yet scales from 10’s to 1000’s of lines. Broadband operators benefit from reducing both operating and capital costs.
“iiNet has been successful by focusing on strong customer support and robust network engineering; values Ericsson holds dear. We are delighted to have been chosen as their partner,” concluded Tony Malligeorgos, Ericsson Australia Director of Marketing and Business Development.

Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.

About Ericsson’s Ethernet DSL Access Solution
Ericsson's Ethernet DSL Access solution enables fixed network operators to deploy the required second-mile bandwidth at less than half of the cost of equivalent ATM-based bandwidth. By avoiding concentration in the DSLAM and connecting directly to an Ethernet aggregation network, the new solution opens up the possibility to support high bandwidth-demanding services without DSLAM bottlenecks, while at the same time reducing transport costs ten-fold. This dramatically alters the economics of rolling out DSL and enables operators to address the 'second wave' of broadband subscribers profitably, following the initial early-adopter wave.
A key advantage of providing DSL services in this way is that existing standardised DSL interfaces are unchanged. The subscriber simply uses a standard DSL modem.
