Product watch: 64-bit edge servers

Sun Microsystems has announced its Galaxy range of one to two-way AMD x64-based systems

In an attempt to storm the previously neglected edge server market, Sun Microsystems has announced its Galaxy range of one to two-way AMD x64-based systems. The Sun Fire x64 range consists of the 1U X2100 and X4100 systems, and the 2U X4200 systems. All systems support AMD's dual-core Opteron processors and up to four or eight GB of memory per processor, and will run Linux, Solaris, and Windows, the company said. Other specs include SATA or SAS disks, multiple gigabit Ethernet, out-of-band management, and RAS features like hot-swappable power supplies. These features vary between systems so see Sun's Web site for the complete specifications. If you go beyond the 'more performance, lower cost, less power' rhetoric, Sun's new servers look like a refreshing alternative to anything the x86 OEMs have on the market today.
