Western Australia's Water Corporation has installed 2600 IP telephony handsets in an upgrade of its existing PABX to VoIP.
The project began with a migration of two greenfield sites to IP to pilot the system's functionality.
Bernard Sloan, operations manager of the Water Corporation's information services branch, said the company needed a system that would facilitate future IP telephony upgrades and provide ongoing support.
"The Water Corporation needs a solution that is innovative, technologically advanced and in line with future [changes]," Sloan said.
"The outcomes of the pilot were excellent given the tight timeframes - the very high standards in terms of project delivery [which were set] have thus far carried on through into the delivery of the enterprise project.
"The replacement and upgrade strategy focuses on upgrading most departmental telephony related systems and includes local support, ongoing service management and transparent disaster recovery."
He said while the company needed a VoIP system that would increase call handling features and enable mobility, it focused on ease of implementation and end-user adoption.
Alphawest provided the solution and the company's general manager Steve McNally said the company will continue to work with the utility to provide ongoing advice and identify long-term cost savings.
