Following the departure of former CIO Doug Falconer, the NSW Department of Housing has lured the Australian Centre for Advanced Computing and Communications' CTO Dr Vladas Leonas for an interim CIO position.
The position is for a three-month contract in the job which will be advertised as a permanent role.
Leonas said that, after four years with AC3, he is looking forward to the "exciting challenges" in the new role.
"I worked with a number of government CIOs [at AC3] and understand what their requirements are," Leonas said. "The great thing about a three-month contract is it allows both parties to establish how it's working."
Computerworld understands former CIO Doug Falconer has moved back into the private sector.
While Leonas has spent the past four years with AC3's supercomputers and other high technology, he does have previous experience in an IT executive environment as the CIO of the NSW Department of Public Works and Services (within the Department of Commerce), a position he held for 12 months.
Leonas said he will "definitely" be applying for the full-time position when it is advertised.
Leonas will report to Adele Thompson, the department's executive director, organizational improvement.
