Rupert Murdoch Snaps Up TV License in Bulgaria

SOFIA (01/27/2000) - After 10 years of waiting, Bulgaria's government has awarded to Balkan News Corp. the first license to operate a private national television network, Vesselin Stoykov, the Chairman of the State Committee of Telecommunications, announced on January 20.

The license allows media mogul Rupert Murdoch's Balkan News Corp. to take over the rights to use the transmission frequencies of Efir 2, which until recently belonged to the Bulgarian National Television.

Balkan News Corp. will also design, implement and support the national network for both TV and radio transmissions. The license is valid for 15 years.

According to Bulgarian laws, a radio and TV network operator is allowed to at the same time be a telecommunications carrier.
