Alcatel revenue and net income rise in Q4

Alcatel reported increased revenue and net income for the fourth quarter.

French telecommunications equipment manufacturer Alcatel had increases in revenue and net income for the fourth quarter, boosted by sales of converged data, voice and video networking equipment to telecommunications carriers, it said Thursday.

Revenue for the quarter totaled Euro 4.09 billion (US$4.85 billion as of Dec. 31, the last day of the period reported), up 7.6 percent from Euro 3.81 billion a year earlier. Net income rose to Euro 344 million, up from Euro 7 million a year earlier.

For the year ahead, the company expects that the market for fixed-line carrier network equipment will continue to grow at between 4 percent and 6 percent, while the wireless market will probably slow down.

The largest part of Alcatel's revenue in the fourth quarter came from fixed communications networks, where revenue totaled Euro 1.72 billion, up from Euro 1.53 billion a year earlier. The company sold a record level of DSL (digital subscriber line) equipment, enough for 6.7 million lines.

Revenue from mobile communications equipment rose to Euro 1.26 billion from Euro 1.09 billion, while revenue from private communications networks fell to Euro 1.16 billion from Euro 1.22 billion a year earlier, the company said.
