Micro Focus® (LSE: MCRO) today announced that BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina (BCBSSC) has selected Micro Focus to support enterprise-wide development and extension of the company’s mainframe applications.

Marking the next chapter of a 20-year relationship between BCBSSC and Micro Focus, BCBSSC will deploy Micro Focus Studio to support continued development of business-critical mainframe applications. Additionally, BCBSSC will adopt Studio’s legacy extension capability to support their Web services and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) development efforts.

BCBSSC’s mainframe applications are developed using Micro Focus APS development environment running on the mainframe. These applications are now being extended to SOA to support their strategy for delivering innovative customer service. Micro Focus has provided BCBSSC a clearly defined path to bring greater value to their application portfolio.

“We are committed to the APS technology, which has become the cornerstone of our enterprise application portfolio,” says Stephen K. Wiggins, Chief Information Officer at Blue Cross BlueShield of South Carolina. “Expanding our long-standing relationship with Micro Focus will enable us to continue to not only leverage the productivity of the APS in which we have invested, but allow us the flexibility to extend to new platforms as we explore options for evolving our technology strategy.”

BCBSSC has a long standing commitment to APS, with a large majority of its core applications written using this product which automatically generates COBOL for final deployment. More than 600 APS-trained mainframe programmers at BCBSSC will utilize Micro Focus Studio software to develop and deploy millions of lines of code at a lower cost.
