Defence deploys new gigabit ethernet technology

The Australian Department of Defence has begun a national network project to upgrade all bases with Gigabit Ethernet.

The upgrade project, estimated at about $2.8 million, will provide improved bandwidth and reliability, as well as improving the flow of secure information between DoD bases.

The project involves using Nortel Ethernet routing Switch 8600s, along with Nortel branded Ethernet routing switches.

The Department of Defence has so far been using network equipment installed before the Y2K rollover. Nortel is a member of the Preferred Computer Systems Panel.

President of Nortel ANZ, Mark Stevens, said the company's relationship with the Department of Defence spans more than a decade.
