Digicor powers up the Ethernet

Digicor has signed on as the distributor of Planet's range of Power over Ethernet and Internet security products to cement its server and networking specialist status.

Director and national sales manager, Richard Huang, said the deal placed a new arrow in its networking bow.

"We were looking for something that has future potential and that hadn't been represented in Australia yet," he said. "Planet does a broader range of products as well as the enterprise switches and wireless routers."

Prior to signing Digicor, the vendor had only maintained a presence locally through a systems integration partner, Huang said.

Taiwan-based Planet produces a raft of products for the networking and communications market. Under the new arrangement, Digicor will initially stock its Power over Ethernet, IP camera security and Internet Security appliances, such as a bandwidth optimiser tool.

"The network is moving beyond LANs," Huang said.

The demand for VoIP services and IP-based security, along with the ratification of the Power over Ethernet 802.3af standard by the IEEE, were providing the inducement for vendors to branch into new technologies, he said.

The trend was also giving resellers a new selection of networking add-ons, Huang said.

"VoIP and [survelliance] security are not traditionally pushed through the IT channel," he said. "It has been the vertical markets that have utilised the network more cleverly.

"We see the potential for resellers to add value and make more margin, which is hard to get from the conventional products in the market."

The Planet range would also allow Digicor to diversify out of its server and traditional networking focus, Huang said.

"The networking market is overwhelmed with many vendors targeting the same things," he said. "We have been in that for the past eight years. We want something that opens up an area. This [Planet] is something new for us."

Huang expected Planet would add 20 per cent to its total sales revenue.

The products would be available from Digicor next month.

Huang said the distributor was hoping to hold a roadshow to showcase its server and networking products in October.
