Telstra expands reach of Hutchison 3G partnership

The Telstra-Hutchison 3G network has been strengthened and expanded to deliver third-generation mobile services access to more than half the population.

Telstra and Hutchison partnered in August last year in a bid to compete effectively with other operators' 3G network rollout plans.

Within the last year, coverage has been added in Canberra, and additional capacity extended across Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, according to a media release.

A small, jointly-owned company, 3GIS, was formed to manage the deployment and operation of the Telstra-Hutchison 3G network. Under the agreement, Telstra provides design, construction and operational services to 3GIS for the radio access network. Further roll out is planned later this year.

Telstra and Hutchison each own and operate separate core networks, application and service platforms, conduct retail and wholesale commercial operations independently, and compete for customers.
