Getronics jump on VoIP

Australian network and desktop outsourcing vendor Getronics has jumped on the convergence bandwagon and is offering an outsourced VoIP service under the banner of "converged communications."

The outsourcer is betting it can push revenues from its new division from 13 percent of gross revenue in 2005 to 35 percent by 2007. The company has also hired two Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert Voice (CCIE Voice) staff to expand its offering.

Converged Communications division manager Rob McCabe said skills in IP telephony and convergence are hard to find and Getronics had invested heavily to get them.

"It is not so much in deploying the IP telephony handsets but the integration, and specifically integrating with applications - by integrating VoIP with applications like active directory, CRM and unified messaging is where the capabilities of these guys comes into play," McCabe said.

"Organizations need to understand the benefit of VoIP is not just telephony but integrating telephony with applications of the business.

Michael Page International has signed with Getronics for the converged communication services and the vendor has also inked a deal with the Meat and Livestock Council of Australia to integrate its CRM package with IP telephony across the entire organization, as well as IP TV at the desktop.

Heavyweights bide their time

Full-service outsourcers are biding their time when it comes to offering VoIP as part their desktop and network infrastructure offerings, with EDS planning to offer VoIP around the middle of 2006 in Australia. This offering will come as part of what the vendor calls "workplace services" which bundles all aspects of infrastructure ranging from desktops and printers to servers and communications networks. EDS currently offers Cisco's VoIP solutions as part of its Agility Alliance discount program, however the workplace services bundle will see VoIP covered as a basic services offering rather than as an option.
