Tourism Australia Deploys IronPort Email Security Appliance

New Australian Government Authority raises productivity in Sydney, Canberra and 14 offices around the world by deploying IronPort for email threat prevention, groupware protection and user policy enforcement

IronPort Systems™, the market-share leader in email security, has announced that Tourism Australia has deployed the company’s model C10 email security appliance to deliver a significantly improved level of service to its 250 mail box users in Australia and 14 offices overseas.

The C10 is IronPort’s entry level system, designed for organisations with up to 1,000 users. The C30 and C60 models scale for the largest organisations, including some of the world’s largest ISPs, and all incorporate Sophos® Anti-Virus, Symantec’s BrightMail® Anti-Spam and IronPort Virus Outbreak Filters™ for effective email threat prevention, groupware protection and policy enforcement.

Roberto Martinelli, Tourism Australia’s Chief Technology Officer, said the installation of the IronPort C10 appliance had delivered an immediate positive impact for his organisation, explaining, “Previously, with all our worldwide traffic passing through Sydney, whether inbound or outbound, we needed to maintain a help service purely for email- and web-related matters”.

He added, “We were typically seeing 8,000 to 10,000 emails a day of which 80 to 90 per cent were either spam or suspected of being virus-infected. This situation posed a real challenge for our people all over the world and the email ‘baby-sitting’ load we had to endure took the equivalent of one full-time person. Thanks to IronPort, that drain on our resources has gone away.”

In addition to providing a dedicated help desk before IronPort was installed, Tourism Australia also allocated resources to tracking email volumes and types for market research purposes. “Now, however,” said Roberto Martinelli, “we no longer find it necessary to do that. IronPort blocks probably better than 99 per cent of the traffic we can do without and our people are much more productive as a result.”

Michael Bosch, IronPort Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand, said he was very pleased to have Australia’s premier tourism body join the ranks of his customers in this region. IronPort’s other local users include the CSIRO, Cisco Systems, iiNet, Museum Victoria, OzEmail, Powercor, the defence contractor BAE Systems and the New Zealand Police.
