Australian IBM staff bypass day of action

Australian employees at IBM chose to forgo a global day of action by workers and unions on Monday.

The worldwide day of action was organized to protest against restructuring and planned job cuts which could see up to 13,000 positions axed.

Because most of the job cuts will be occurring in Europe, Australian workers showed little interest in the action plan.

An A/NZ spokesperson for IBM said the day passed without incident.

Most of the action occurred in France, according to the Alliance@IBM Workers Group, with strike action also taking place in the US, Italy, Japan, Germany and Belguim.

Australian Services Union (ASU) assistant national secretary Greg McLean confirmed action has been limited to the northern hemisphere.

"There was no expression of interest passed on to us by IBM workers to join the global campaign," he said.
