New Alcatel network management software automates security to protect enterprises against intrusion attacks

Sydney –5 May 2005 – Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced availability of the Alcatel OmniVista 2770 Quarantine Manager, a new network management application that provides network quarantine security for the Alcatel OmniSwitch product line. The new Alcatel OmniVista management tool simplifies network security administration and improves network protection by integrating alerts from Alcatel switches and third-party intrusion detection and prevention systems through a unified network management and security platform.

To effectively deliver IP-based applications and services to users, enterprises need networks that are self-healing from intrusions, such as viruses and denial of service (DoS) attacks. The Alcatel OmniVista 2770 Quarantine Manager delivers this network security by working with intrusion detection systems (IDS) / intrusion prevention systems (IPS) from third-parties, such as Fortinet. Alcatel’s Quarantine Manager detects attackers and completely blocks their access by immediately quarantining them in a virtual LAN where they cannot impact the enterprise network, or banning them from reconnecting to the network even if they try to connect from a different location.

The Alcatel OmniVista 2770 Quarantine Manager can also be configured to present a list of intrusion suspects, allowing the network manager to review the information before acting. Support for multi-vendor networks using a combination of Alcatel and non-Alcatel switches further extends the network managers flexibility, while protecting investments in network infrastructure and increasing security.

"Alcatel's OmniVista Quarantine Manager provides us a deeper level of security protection from intrusion threats," said Russell Leathe, director of Networking and Computer Services at Gordon College, located in Wenham, MA. "The idea of being able to assess and respond to incoming threats without the network being affected, is an innovative solution to one of the most critical security issues in networking today."

The software on the Alcatel OmniVista 2770 Quarantine Manager features pre-configured quarantine triggers for point-and-click network security configuration. These triggers use network management traps from Alcatel OmniSwitches or syslog information from Fortinet’s FortiGate ASIC-based security appliances to quarantine an offending user. Fortinet is a member of Alcatel’s security partner program. The software supports other commercial or open source IDS/IPS solutions through an expert mode feature that allows network managers to develop custom quarantine rules.

“The intrusion threats facing networks today are varied and ever-evolving, making it imperative that the various security systems in an enterprise work together,” said Simon Rachowski, country sales manager: networking infrastructure. “In fulfilling this mandate, the Alcatel OmniVista 2770 Quarantine Manager improves the responsiveness and protection benefits of both the switch and the IDS/IPS and supports Alcatel’s enterprise strategy to deliver open systems that protect current and future IT investments.”

The Alcatel OmniVista 2770 Quarantine Manager is a component of Alcatel’s CrystalSec security framework. The Alcatel CrystalSec framework offers proactive and containment security solutions composed of comprehensive switch-based security capabilities, and integration with security appliance industry leaders.

The Alcatel OmniVista 2770 Quarantine Manager is an optional component of Alcatel’s OmniVista 2500 core network management system. The Alcatel OmniVista 2770 Quarantine Manager is available now for Windows, RedHat Linux, and Sun Solaris platforms. The software costs $14,995 per server.
