A significant step forward in industrialisation of TD-SCDMA in China

Sydney, 27 April 2005 — Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) and Datang Mobile, a Chinese TD-SCDMA equipment vendor, today jointly demonstrated a live end-to-end TD-SCDMA solution during the TD-SCDMA International Summit in Beijing. This demonstration represents a significant milestone in the industrialisation of TD-SCDMA and follows a partnership agreement the two companies signed in November 2004 to foster the development of TD-SCDMA in China. Alcatel has engaged in this co-operative effort through Alcatel Shanghai Bell, Alcatel’s flagship Chinese company.

The end-to-end TD-SCDMA solution integrated Alcatel’s core network solution, Datang’s mobile radio access solution, and terminals. The demonstration was conducted over a live TD-SCDMA network that connected users at the summit venue in Beijing with Alcatel Shanghai Bell’s 3G Reality Center in Shanghai.

Visitors to the Alcatel Shanghai Bell and Datang booth were able to experience first-hand a range of 3G/TD-SCDMA applications including video calling, high-speed web browsing, file down-loading and video streaming at data rates that reached 384kbit/s.

“Today’s demonstration is a major step forward in the industrialisation of TD-SCDMA in China which proves that TD-SCDMA is a solution that works and is ready for market introduction,” said Gerard Dega, President of Alcatel Shanghai Bell. “Alcatel Shanghai Bell is in position to offer its customers any one of the 3G standards depending on their requirements,” he added.
