Polycom boosts Asia Pacific presence to capture greater share of Collaborative Communications market

 • 20 April, 2005 13:37

In line with its 15th anniversary and increasing customer demand for conferencing and collaboration solutions, Polycom, the world's leading provider of unified collaborative communications solutions, has announced that it will step up its presence in the Asia Pacific region in 2005. The company plans to increase employee headcount throughout the region, boost service operations and place a stronger emphasis on product and technical support and training to increase its leading marketshare of the market for video, voice, data and Web conferencing systems.

Named by Frost & Sullivan as the top provider of video conferencing systems in Asia Pacific with a 47.3 percent overall market share entering 2004, Polycom reported its three best performing markets for the year were Australia, India and Korea. Each of these markets saw 20 percent revenue growth from the previous year. China and Japan remain Polycom’s most significant markets in terms of units sold and revenue. Polycom’s recent FY2004 results passed the US$500 million revenue mark with the Asia Pacific region accounting for 20 percent of revenues.

“Polycom has attained significant penetration in the unified collaborative communications market with a number of enterprises making the switch to a centralised infrastructure for unified audio, video and Web conferencing,” said Jean-Francois Poulain, Polycom’s Vice President and Managing Director, Asia Pacific.

“Many successes were recorded in 2004 with significant customer wins across the entire region. We expect this trend to continue in 2005 despite increased competition in key markets as Polycom announces new and advanced products and solutions as well as set industry firsts,” added Poulain.

In 2004, Polycom Asia Pacific increased headcount by almost 35 percent and will increase headcount by a further 15 percent across the region to meet strategic goals this year.

Customers in the Region
Major Asia Pacific customers last year included: Swinburne University (Australia), The Ministry of Agriculture (China), China Unicom (China), State Administration of Coal Mine Safety (China), Daejeon Fire Headquarters (Korea), Gifu University (Japan), Election Committee (Thailand), Taipei City Government and Taiwan Central Disease Control, to name just a few.

Technology Partnerships and New Solutions
2004 marked a year when Polycom brought to market major technological advancements such as StereoSurround, the SoundStation 2W, VSX 3000, and PVX in the audio, video and Web world of conferencing - many ahead of its competitors. Strategic partnerships with companies such as Avaya, Japan Telecom, Juniper Networks, Microsoft, Nortel and Telstra Australia reaffirm Polycom’s leadership and ensure its solutions integrate seamlessly with our partners’ communications infrastructures.

The Microsoft multi-year agreement with Polycom aims to deliver business-quality, rich media collaboration solutions across communication devices, applications and services; empowering customers to connect and share information in real-time regardless of location or type of call.

The initial offering combines the presence awareness and instant messaging capabilities of Microsoft Office Live Communications Server and Windows® Messenger with Polycom’s widely installed ViewStation EX, FX and VSX desktop and group video conference systems; SoundPoint and SoundStation IP handsets and conference phones; MGC voice and video bridges; and the WebOffice conference portal.

Besides significant strategic partnerships and customer wins, Polycom also began manufacturing its award-winning line of voice conferencing products in China through an expanded, strategic outsourcing relationship with Celestica (NYSE, TSX: CLS), a world leader in electronics manufacturing services.

Awards
In addition, 2004 was a remarkable year for Polycom in terms of the number of honours awarded to the company. Two highly distinguished awards presented by Frost & Sullivan honour Polycom with a 2004 Product Line Strategy Leadership Award for Polycom’s industry leading line of conference phones, and CEO of the Year for Bob Hagerty, Polycom’s President and CEO. Bob was recognised for driving conferencing and collaboration toward the mainstream.

VeriTest, the world’s largest independent technology organisation with labs in the US, Asia and Europe, also announced that the Polycom MGC-100 outperformed its competitors with “the most complete set of security, administration operation and control features.” Polycom has the only bridge that passed all 63 tests, four and a half times more than the nearest competitor, clearly demonstrating that no one comes close to matching the Polycom MGC solution.
